While business has been an unpredictable roller-coaster (down-up-down-up…) since late 2008, a recovery seems to be under way, in that since February 2010, more and more new and old customers have been calling for temporary workers.
The good news - that our current customer base has been increasing - is moderated by the fact that these companies are not employing as many temps as they used to, nor as often. So, until things pick up for everyone all-at-once, more customers does not yet mean more temp. employees working on an everyday basis. At any rate, a lot of customers calling for a few employees is much better than just a few customers calling for few employees! And when they do all call at once, we’re BUSY!
Many customers are putting screening requirements into place regarding temporaries. We, in turn must screen new people applying to work for us. The requirements are:
- Clean Criminal Background Check – This varies by customer, but generally means no violent felonies, no sex crimes, and no theft of any kind (shoplifting, robbery, forgery, etc.)
- Clean Drug Test – no drugs (including medical Marijuana)
- Capable of Heavy Lifting – requires both strength and stamina for such things as wheel-barrowing concrete or moving furniture up flights of stairs.
Generally speaking, we have more open slots for new workers on the first few days of each new month than at any other time. There are also times mid- to late month that we have so many job seekers that we do not accept new applications. This varies as the mood of the economy varies, which is to say it is like predicting which way the weather vane will point at a certain time. Therefore:
